Handicapped Crimewave, Part XXVII

DAYTON, OH - Officers knocking at the door of one Denise Harris, a blind cancer sufferer and recent crime victim, somehow found the fine art of conversation wasn’t enough to avoid an altercation requiring a stun gun and handcuffs. Is there no end to the threat these disabled desperadoes pose to the boys in blue?

Family members are angry and speaking out after Dayton police used a stun gun on a woman who is blind and suffering from cancer. Police said they were looking for a suspect when they knocked on Denise Harris’s door Thursday morning. But according to both police and witnesses, things quickly got out of hand and Harris was tased.

“She was able to force herself down on to the floor and not be cooperative, grabbing on to the detective. A taser was dry stunned onto her arm to control her hand movement, then she was cuffed,” said Sgt. Charles Anderson.

Her family said she was yelling at officers because she was scared.

“She was terrified. She was extremely terrified,” said Harris’s niece, Dionna. “She was scared because the person identified themselves as a police officer. But she’s been robbed before by someone using the same technique.”

They said police used unnecessary force when officers came to the Fernwood Avenue apartment looking for Harris’s son, who is wanted. Officers said Harris attacked a detective.

“She’s blind and they pulled her off her Futon, handcuffed her and tased her because he said she swung at him. She can’t see,” said Harris’s sister Elvita Harris. “I’m very frustrated and upset. Dayton police need to implement a sensitivity program.”

And You’re Outta Milk, Too

Somewhere out inna UK, the local police busted into the wrong house. Look, mistakes happen in our line of work. Sometimes those mistakes don’t leave you with a cracked head, a bullet in the back or a falsified criminal record. In this case, you’d think the guy wouldn’t complain, but there’s just no pleasing some people - even when you’re nice enough to leave a note onna fridge.

I guess up in Lakeville, MN, they got a whole different idea of policing. A guy named Troy Molde was sleeping in his bed at 3 AM and woke up to the sight of two cops in his bedroom. Why? Because they wanted to tell him his door was unlocked.

Just goes to show, if you don’t treat your home like a prison and nail down every little thing, suspicious characters’ll come by and make you regret it.

LAKEVILLE, Minnesota (AP) — A Lakeville man says he feels violated after two police officers woke him up at 3 a.m. to tell him his door was unlocked.

Their surprise visit was part of a public service campaign to remind residents to secure their homes to prevent thefts. Usually, officers just leave notices on doors.

But they went further in Troy Molde’s case on Thursday. Police entered the house where four children under 7 were having a sleepover, and then went upstairs to Molde’s bedroom.

The officers told Molde his garage door was open, the TV was on, the keys to his truck were left in the ignition and the door to his house was ajar.

A police spokesman says the intrusion was justified because the officers’ initial door knocks went unanswered, and they wanted to make sure nothing was wrong.

He says the kids inside — Molde’s two sons and two nephews — were afraid to wake their dad, so the officers went upstairs.

Hey, cops have job pressures da rest of you wouldn’t even dream about. Sure, it looks like we do whatever we want whenever we want, but you try and handle that responsibility widdout blowing off a little steam. So what if we take it home and every now and again the ladies in our lives of crimefighting walk into a doorway or two?

Apparently it’s a big deal enough for a coupla broads in Seattle to write a story about it: Cops Who Abuse Their Wives Rarely Pay The Price.

Although that was back in 2003, so I guess the problem’s all cleared up by now.
