Chicago Interrogation Pioneer Arrested In Florida
Posted by Officer Bob
TAMPA — Retired Chicago PD Commander Jon Burge was picked up by those damn liberals in the FBI today. Guy was minding his own business out in the sun and next thing you know, he’s being hauled in for doing his job back in Chicago. So he was enthusiastic about interrogations, so what? Guy was fired in ‘93, what’s the point of dragging up all this old news? Can’t a guy put a plastic bag over another guy’s head or rig up a guy to a car battery without making a federal case out of it?
A special prosecutors’ report paid for by Cook County and released in 2006 concluded that dozens of suspects had been tortured by Chicago police but that no one could be prosecuted because the statute of limitations had run out.
Today’s indictment gets around that legal problem by charging Burge with perjury, not with any instances of actual torture.
Burge denied any torture took place while answering written questions in 2003 as part of the lawsuit filed by Hobley, one of the alleged victims.
According to the indictment, the Hobley lawsuit included a specific allegation that police officers placed a plastic bag over Hobley’s head until he lost consciousness.
The indictment cites the questions and answers during the civil questioning, noting that Burge was asked whether he ever used torture methods–including beatings, the use of restraints or machines to deliver electric shocks–or whether other officers were involved.
Burge objected to the question as overly broad, and then answered: “I have never used any techniques set forth above as a means of improper coercion of suspects while in detention or during interrogation.”
In January, the city approved a $20 million settlement with four alleged torture victims.
According to the indictment, Burge was a Chicago police officer from 1970 to 1993, a detective at Area 2 police headquarters on the South Side from 1972 to 1974, and an Area 2 sergeant from 1977 to 1980.
From about 1981 to 1986 he was a lieutenant and supervisor of detectives in the Area 2 violent crimes unit. Later, he was commander of the Bomb and Arson Unit and later commander of Area 3 detectives.
Florida Sheriff Taking Heat For Using Uniform On Podium

LEE COUNTY, FLORIDA: Wasn’t I just talkin about dis? Now da feds are all up in arms about it. My god, don’t they have enough ta do with a terrorist about to get elected to da White House?
A complaint sent to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel alleges that Scott violated the Hatch Act because his agency receives federal dollars, and Scott was engaging in political activity while on duty and in uniform. Erica S. Hamrick, senior attorney for the agency, said in an e-mail Tuesday that an investigation was being opened. Neither she nor her office could be reached for further comment Tuesday.
…
Some also are questioning whether Scott violated the county code of ethics. The statute says no county government employees are allowed to wear any uniform or clothing that would identify them as such while engaging in a political campaign not sponsored by the county, even if they are off-duty. But the sheriff, according to Sgt. Larry King, is not considered an employee of the county — he is an elected official. His budget is approved by the county, but he answers to the governor and to his constituents.
Commissioner Tammy Hall said her office, too, received several calls about the matter, many from out-of-state. Hall said several of the people may not have been aware that the commissioners do not oversee the sheriff. She reiterated, though, that her office has a good working relationship with Scott and she backed his integrity.
Still, other local officials were outspoken against Scott’s choice of words. Lyle Olson, executive committee member for the Democratic Party of Lee County said the action showed “totally poor judgment.”
“It was meant to incite anti-Obama feelings,” Olson said. “Then he tries to claim it was his personal opinion, yet he was standing there in his uniform.”

Uniformed Officer Takes The Podium At A Florida Political Event

FLORIDA: Some countries frown on the practice of law enforcement or military officers in uniform making political statements. Dats’ because those places are run by a buncha latte-sippin’ book-readin’ liberals who don’t know what’s good for ‘em. Down in Florida, Sheriff Mike Scott knows what’s what all right and he ain’t afraid to say it in uniform. Hey, if you don’t believe me that people love it when guys in uniform get up and give political speeches then I’m afraid you don’t know your German history.
Denver Police Union Copwear: “We Get Up Early To Beat The Crowds”
Posted by Officer Bob
DENVER – The First Amendment, the last amendment, whatever. The boys in Denver know how to keep da peace, and busted 154 hippie bums to do it during the Democratic convention.
And when they’re on their off hours, those Mile High City nightstick jockeys really know how to have a good laugh. You don’t find a hilarious t-shirt like this just anywhere, now.
Here’s some blah blah about it from some pinkos somewhere out onna internet:
Denver’s police union is facing criticism for printing a commemorative T-shirt that makes light of the use of violence by police, particularly in the wake of 154 arrests during the week of Democratic National Convention this past August.
“We get up early, to beat the crowds,” the shirt reads, followed by “2008 DNC.” The words flank a grinning police officer holding a baton and wearing a hat with a crossed-out number “68,” presumably making reference to activist organization Recreate 68, which staged several anti-war demonstrations during the convention.
“The people of Denver were assured by the city that it would respect First Amendment rights during the DNC, and that that police officers were being trained to do so. The actions of police during the DNC, which involved numerous violations of people’s right to freedom of speech and assembly, put the lie to those promises,” said Recreate 68’s Glenn Spagnuolo. “And now this appalling, tasteless t-shirt shows why. The members of Denver’s police union clearly have no respect for the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution. The Denver Police Department Operations Manual includes a Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, which begins, ‘As a Law Enforcement Officer, my fundamental duty is to serve mankind, to safeguard lives and property, to protect the innocent against deception, the weak against oppression or intimidation, and the peaceful against violence or disorder; and to respect the Constitutional rights of all men to liberty, equality and justice.’ The creation of this t-shirt makes a mockery of that statement.”
Detective Nick Rogers of the Police Protective Association said that the union predicts sales of about 2,000 shirts in addition to the ones given free to Denver police officers, and also told KMGH that he hadn’t received any complaints about the shirt.

SEATTLE – Can’t tell when this clip was shot, but it does have a couple of grunge refugees in it, so I figure it’s recent. My favorite part is the very end when the female officer stands to block the camera. Nice work – nobody needs to see us kneel on a guy’s head, do they?
Beating Diabetes In Dearborn, MI

MICHIGAN – So this guy, he’s got hyperglaucomoa or whatever, and he’s driving his car like a maniac. When the officers finally pull him over, it looks like he’s drunk. So obviously whatchoo gotta do in a case like that is pound the living crap outta the guy and put him in a coma. (Video after the jump)
The wife of 59-year-old Ernest Griglen, in a coma since June, has filed a federal lawsuit against two Michigan police departments, alleging that officers beat Griglen into a coma.
Pamela Griglen and attorney Arnold Reed, seeking $20 million in damages, say that officers from the Allen Park and Dearborn police departments severely beat Mr. Griglen, of Detroit, in the head and face during a June 15 traffic stop, following a chase, after mistaking a hypoglycemic episode for alcohol intoxication.
Police reports say that Griglen was being chased due to a domestic violence complaint, and described him as “combative,” saying that he had fled a traffic stop and resisted arrest. The Dearborn report indicates the use of pepper spray on Griglen and cites “a black object” on Griglen’s waistband. A breathalyzer test confirmed that Griglen was not under the influence of alcohol, and officers later found his insulin pump.
“The unnecessary and completely excessive force was something that was not needed,” said Reed. “Doctors have indicated he will probably never wake up. What his wife is left with is everyday she sees him and stands over him and talks to him and he can’t respond. No amount of money in the world can compensate her or her family for this type of injustice.”
